JOHN AND MARY.
A French journal has been digging into the soul of the "jeune fille," and asking her what she wants in a husband as to colour, age, and name. The vast majority of 50,000 reply that they want a dark man of 27, and his name should be the French equivalent of John. None of your Algernons or Erics for the cautious damsel, comments the Daily Chronicle. None of your Hippolytes or Pauls — mercurial or subversive persons. They want John when it comes to husbandry. And we shall have to reconsider the title of a famous play and call it "The Importance of being John." There art only two really serious forenames that have come down through the centuries, John and Mary. The French girls are right in demanding the solidity of a John (which has sometimes degenerated into a more genial Jack). On the other hand, the good Catholic girl ha 3 always Mary somewhere before her surname, even though the frivolous pervert it to Molly or Polly. But a John and a Mary (not Jack and Polly) should always be prosperous and happy.
