INVERCARGILL, 27th February. A land ballot for two estates at Fortification Hill and Knowsley Park, recently cut up by the Government, was held to-day. _ Competition was not keen. One section in the former and six in the Tatter were not applied /or. ALLEGED LIBEL 'TAIHAPE, 27th February. Writs fon alleged libel have been served on P. J. Dunne (proprietor and editor of the Ohakune Times) and A. A. , Mattrass (dairyman, of Ohakune), 1 on behalf of A. H. Wiikie (land agent, Ohakune), plaintiff claiming £250 damages. In each case the alleged libel was contained in a letter signed '"A. A. Mattrass," which appeared in' the Ohakune Times, and contained assertions to the effect that it seemed strange that Councillor Wiikie should challenge the Mayor to a bout of fisticuffs, and that the ratepayers expected something better from him ; also that it appeared a strange attitude for a Justice of the Peace to adopt. FEILDING SHEEP FAIR FEILDING, 27th February. At the annual sheep fair to-day 26,000 sheep were penned, and prices were very high all round. , The highest was for ilocks. Thirty-one shillings per head was given for a pen of two-tooth Romney ewes.
