HIGHLAND SOCIETY CONCERT

A successful and enjoyable "ceilah inhor" was held by the Wellington Highland Society last evening, at tho New Century Hall. The hall was well filled, among those present being the Hon. A. L. Herdman, the Hon. T. W. Hislop, and Mr. T. C. A. Hislop. Owing to tho illness of tho chief (Mr. J. G-. W. Aitken), the senior chieftain (Professor Mackenzie) presided. Apologies for absence wero received from Sir Walter Buchanan, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), and Mr. O. B. Morison. A musical programme was given, song 3 being sung by Meeda.mes Reid, M'Vicar, and Miss M'Lennan, and Mr. J. M'Donald. An exhibition of national dances 'was also given. Pipe music was given by Mr. T. M'Donald, who was the piper for the evoning. During the evening conversation was carted on in Gaelic— one of the objects of the society is to preserve and cultivate the Gaelio tongue — to tho puzzlement of many of the audience, whose education has been neglected in that respect.

A long bicycle tour through New Zealand is being made by Mr. Charles Barwell, of Panmora, Auckland. Mr. Barwell, who is a retired engineer, aged 50, left his home on 6th January and cycled through to Invercargill, a distance of 1237 miles, by sth February. He went down the East Coast of the South Island, and is now riding back to Auckland; via Westland. His best day's run was 93 miles, made in the Canterbury district. He carries a tent, a sleepingbag cooking utensils, spare clothes, and a three days' supply of food. A number of Wellington people have been invited to witness the ceremony of driving the first pile of the new training wall across the Wairau River, at the bar, on Monday, 9th March. For failing to register the births of children within the prescribed time, Andrew Dunbar Sloane and Patrick Minogue were each fined 5s and 7s costs by Mr. VV. G. Riddell, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court to-day. It is stated that a Labour candidate may tako the field to contest tho Waira« rapa seat at the next general elcotion.
