WOODVILLE MEETING
WOODVILLE, 19th February. Ihe Autumn Meeting of the Woodville Jockey Club concluded to-day in fine weather. The attendance was again large, and speculation \^« brisk, the sum of £27,042 being put through the totahsator for the two days, as against £24,173 for the corresponding meeting last year. After an exhaustive enquiry, R. Hatch, rider of Alecto in the Victoria Hack Handicap, on the first day, was disqualified for twelve months for pulling his mount. The owner and trainer, D. Webster and F. Higgott, got the benefit of the doubt. Remaining results : — Autumn Handicap, of ISO soys ; one mile and a distance.— 4 Byron, 9.0, 1 ; 6 Braeburn, 7.4, 2; 7 Trieze, 7.4, 3. Also started: 2 Immer 9.0, 8 Mangarost 8.0, 1 Kooya 7,10, 5 Moutoa Girl 7.8, 3 Suratura 7.0, 9 St. Bees 6.7. Before the start Settler threw his rider, Luke Wilson, twice, and the horse was withdrawn. Suratura was left when the barrier went up, and Immer, St. Bees, and Triexe took it in turn to lead the field. When fairly in tho straight the horses were bunched, and then. Braeburn vas the first to show out. Immediately afterwards, however. Byron challenged, and these two fought out a desperate finish, Byron gaining the verdict by a length. Trieze was half a length behind Braeburn. Time, Imin 57sec. Settlers' Hack Handicap, of 75 soys; six furlongs.—- 2 Rehe, 8.2, 1; 4 Arrahna, 7.2, 2; 1 Lady Vladimir, 8.0, 3. Also started : 3 Hiwitapu 9.0, 6 Conziska 7.3, 8 Keynote 8.12, 6 Whisperer 6.12, 7 Mysterium 6.12. From a bunched field, Rene drew out in the straight, and won comfortably by a couple of lengths, half a length being I between the second and third horses. Time, Imin 15sec. Shorts Handicap, of 100 soys ; five furlongs.— 4 Zeus, 7.8, 1; 3 Simple Sam, 7.9, 2; 2 Evadne, 6.9, 3. Also started: 1 Ineuru 7.13, 6 Suratura 7.10, 5 Merry Guy 7.7. After a false start, Suratura set the field a merry go. Entering the straight, Simple Sam was in command, and looked like winning, but Zeus, coming up fast on the outside, just managed to score by half a length. Evadne was close up third. Time, Imin 1 4-ssec. Hack Scurry, of 65 soys; five furlongs. — 1 Orleans, 1 ; 2 Rangiwhetu, 2 ; 7 Lady Dalesford, 3. Also started : 8 Combustion, 10 Arnica! , 3 Ohau, 4 Tiora, 11 Komako, 9 Miss Parata, 5 Ranfurly, 6 Mystified, 12 Muscadine, 13 Janitor. Orleans got away with the ! lead, and won by lialf a length, two lengths being between second and third. Time, Imin 3sec. Maharahara Handicap, of 110 sovsj one mile.— 3 Mysteriarch, 8.10, 1; 2 Guiding Way, 8.12, 2; 1 Master Lupin, 9.0, 3. Also started : 4 Mon Ami 8.0, 5 Parawanui, 8.0. After the start Parawanui established a load of ten lengths, but the field closed up near the entrance to the straight, and then a great race for supremacy ensued. Guiding Way had a clear lead when fairly in the straight, but was then challenged by Mystemrch, who gradually forged ahead, and won by half a length. Time, Imin 43 3-ssec.
