SIR JOSEPH WARD AT TE AROHA
Sir Joseph Ward, Leader of the Opposition, delivered a political address at Te Aroha on Friday evening last. Theie was an attendance of about 900 The Mayor of Tc Aroha, Mr. R. L. Somers, presided. Amongst those pre* sent was the Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister of Railways. It may be explained that Te Aroha is in Mr. Herries's constituency, and as part of the proceedings were in the nature of .a social he was invited to attend, which he did. Sir Joseph dealt at considerable length with the recent strike, and denied emphatically that the Opposition Party was in any degree sympathetic with the Federation of Labour. He was in favour of settling the strike by an appeal to reason rather than by an appeal to force. Ho condemned the action of the Government in repealing the Second Ballot Act and substituting nothing therefor. He dwelt on the beneficial legislation passed by the Seddon and Ward Governments. Sir Joseph was presented by the members of the Te Aroha Liberal League with a loyal and congratulatory address.
