HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLED REPORT. The Department of Agriculture-, " Industries, and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, 31st January. (Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot) : — Meat generally. — The market is dull and unsettled. Mutton : High prices are restricting businesb in the mutton market. Prices for North Island heave declined from 5d per lb to 4|d._ Lamb : High prices ha\o been restricting business, but have declined. Other than Canterbury, per lb 6gd. As high as 7d has been obtained in lnoro than one instance. The demand is chiefly for Australian, which may bo quoted Id lower. Beef : Stocks of New Zealand beef on hand aro light. There is a fair demand. New Zealand hinds, per lb 4i}d, fores 4d. Buttor. — 'The market is quiet, but there is no reduction in prices, with a fair demand. There is only a moderate demand for Now Zealand. Present price's of New Zealand butters aro expected to create an increasing demand. Thcro is no change in prices for New Zealand, Australian, Argentine, and Siberian. Danish, per cwt 125s to 128s. Cheese. — The market is quiet but steady, with no change in prices, for Canadian. It is reported that some sellers are bearing the market for New Zealand choose. New Zealand white, per cwt, 64b 6d to 655. There is no change in price for coloured. Hemp.— Manila: The market remains firm. American buying continues in Philippines. Purchase* to date estimated at approximately 100,000 bake. ' At this end the market is quiet but steady at last quotations. The output from Manila for the week was 19,000 bales. New Zealand: The market is quiet but steady. Fair hemp in dock offered at £24 to £24 5s per ton; high point fair in same position has sold at £25 ; ♦forward shipment, good fair, per ton, £26 10s; fair, £24 ss. Sieal: The market t& steadier, and tho price .is equal to £27 to £2? 10s per ton e.i.f. Europe. Slocks as at 30th December wero 88,174 bales against 93,904 previous year. Total oxports for year, 875,997 bales against 855,366 for tho previous year. Wool.— Tho market is quiet but firm.
