HON. MR. HERRIES AND MR. WILFORD

A CONTRADICTION BY THE MINISTER. In his speech at Petone on Friday night last Mr. Wilford assorted that the travelling allowance of the General Manager of Railways had been increased, while 2s a night was taken off the amount paid to boilermakers. that is, the Government had cut down the boilerrnakers' pay from 6s to 4s. " The actual position is," stated Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister of Railways, to a Post reporter to-day, " that new regulations have been gazetted under which the staff receive material benefits in 'the way of leave of absence and travelling allowances, and the benefits apply, not as suggested, to the General Manager ' only, but to a large number of the members of the Railway Service in the respective positions. The Statement that the pay of boilermakers has been reduced is inaccurate and misleading. No reduction has been made in respect to such men. The Government has, moreover, by legislation, made considerable improvements in the pay of members of the railway staff, and these have already affected the operating expenditure of the Department. The alterations made in the ratio of pay and the regulations are in fulfilment of -the promises made by the Government of. the day before and since coming into power."
