GROWTH OF TRADE WITH CANADA

REMARKS BY COMMISSIONER. AUCKLAND, 2nd February. Figures showing the imports from Canada to New Zealand during the last year have been compiled by the Canadian Trade Commissioner (Mr W. A. Beddoe). These show that the value of imports for that period amounted to £452,519. The value of imports for the previous year was £393,810. the increase for the year 1913 thus being £58,709. Mr. Beddoe was asked if he looked upon the increase as satisfactory. In one sense I do, and in another sense I don't," he replied. ".I think that between countries presumed to be enjoying reciprocal tariffs, the increase of trade should be much larger. I find that the New Zealand trade with Canada, fostered by reciprocal preferential tariffs, is increasing by leaps and bounds, whereas trade between Canada and New Zealand is increasing steadily, but has not the 'advantage of a tariff based upon true , reciprocity. By this I mean that Canada gives preference on what New Zealand sells, but New Zealand does not give Canada preference upon the principal articles which the latter sells to this country. This subject I will probably discuss at greater length at some futuro time."
