VULCAN MINE TRAGEDY
EXPLOSION LIKE A VOLCANIC ERUPTION. ' A COURAGEOUS PRIEST. (By Telegraph.— Press Association.—Copyright.) , NEW YORK, 17th December. Eye-witnesses describe tho Vulcan mine explosion at Newcastle as being equal in appearance to a- volcanic eruption. Flame and smoke shot out of the mine's mouth, and the whole mountain rocked from the explosion, while the detonation was like the noise of a thousand cannon. Forty men were working in the mine at the timt^ and only two were rescutid. The victims were all married men. Thoir bodies, when recovered, were frightfully mangled. Their wives and children crowded to the mouth of the mine .hysterically giving way to their grief. There were pathotic scenes, which continued hour after hour. Father Carrigan penetrated the mine, ahead of the rescuers, a-t the imminent risk of his life, in order to accord the last rites of the Church to any dying persons he might Hud.
