Petherick, secretary of tho New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, will leave to-morrow for Auckland to manage the championship tennis meeting in that city. Mr. A. C. Gow, who has been stationmaster at Feathorston for tho paht few years, has boon transferred to Ngahau* ranga, and Mr. H. Kearney, of (hat station, will take up Mr. Gow'b duties at Featherston. Mr. F. W. Furkert, inspecting engineer for the Public Works Department, who has been on an extended visit to Europe and Canada, returned to New Zealand by the Niagara. He is duo in Wellington from Auckland this afternoon. At the close of a, meeting of the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association last evening, the Chairman (Mr. R. Beere) on. behalf of the committee, presented tho bon. secretary, Mr. D. Murray Keen, with a spirit etaiul on the oc casion of his approaching marriage. Air. Beere referred to the good work done by Mr. Keen during his four years of secretaryship, and his remarks were heartily endorsed by Mr. * Arthur L. Berry (match secretary). At a meeting of the Fcilding Fir© Board yesterday, a motion w»tb passed regretting the retirement of Mr. J. J. Mallard, owing to being promoted to Dunedin. Mr. Pirani eulogised the services rendered to the brigade members and to the fire Bervice generally, referred to tho good feeling always displayed by Mi. Mallard towards his fellow members, and wished him a full measure of prosperity and happiness in his new sphere of action. Mr. Goodbehcre (chairman) endorsed tho tribute paid, und expressed his personal regret al losing Mr. Mallard's services. At the meeting of tho To Aro School Committee last flight a letter was read from the headmaster, Mr. Clement Watson, 8.A., informing the cbmniittou that ho had sent in his resignation to tho Education Board. The- following resolution was carried unanimously \ — "The committee expresses its sincere regvet that the state of Mr. Watson's health renders such a step necessary, and places on record its hign appreciation of the faithful and valuable work done by him during the long period of his headmastership, extending over thirty-three years, and its deep sense of the value of his services in the cause of education 'generally, and to the To Aro School and district iii particular. The committee hopes that his health will bo thoroughly restored, and that he will bo ablo to enjoy his well-deserved leisure for many years to come." The Secretary for Labour (Mr. J. Lomas), who retires officially at the .end of the financial year, 31st March, 1914, will be succeeded by Mr. F. W. Rowley, who is at present Chief Inspector of Factories and Deputy-Registrar of Industrial Unions. Mr. Rowley will assume office on Ist January, 1914, as Mr. Lomas, in accordance with tho usual custom, will actually terminate his duties on 31st December next to retire on three months' leave of absence with full pay. Mr. Rowley joined tho Labour Department about twenty years ago us a cadet, and has been attached to tho headquarters staff ever since. In or about 1903 he became Inspector of Factories, and three years later accountant, while in the year following he was appointed Deputy-Chief Inspector of Factories. In 1910 Mr. Rowley became DeputyRegistrar of Industrial Unions, and some three months since ho was made Chief Inspector of Factories.
