PRESENTATION TO MR. MALLARD

In presenting. Mr. J. J. Mallard with a case of pipes and tobacco pouch, on behalf of the members and executive officers of the Dannevirke Fire Board, tho Mayor (Mr. E. A. Ransom) referred at the quarterly meeting of the board in appreciative terms to Mr. Mallard's setvices as a member of the board yinue its inception in 1908, his capacity for mastering details, and his wide knowledge of all matters appertaining to tiie duties attached to his position. While expressing regret that it was the last occasion on which Mr. Mallard wordd ■take part in the board's deliberations, Mr. Ransom congratulated Mr. Mallard on his promotion to the position of secretary to the National Insurance Company at Dunedin. Mr. 11. M. Didsbury (Napier), in endorsing the remarks of the "Mayor, made reference to MiMallard's "reference collection." which embraced records of most valuable infot(nation regarding fire losses, shipwrecks, and ibems of interest in commercial matters gleaned from newspapers and events m alt parts of the wdrld. Mr. Did&b-ny hoped that, although Mr. Mallard would not be present, his advice and assistance would be at the dispoßul of the hoard whenever required. Mr. W. Dobson (secretary to the board) said that Ue had been awjociated with Mr. Mallard sin«;fe the inception of tho board, and it was with feelings of keen regret that he viewed his impending removal from Wellington, and consequent retirement from tho board. Mr. Mallard was regarded as tho father of the board, and, although keenly alive to the smallest dctailcoijnected with its administration. and businesslike to a degree, the seeri'tary said he had always lound Mr. Mallard strictly impartial, and all his actions had been characterised by an absolute sense of fair play, Mr. Mallard, in' thanking tho several Bpeakera for their remarks, said he would value the accompanying gift as a token of tlie pleasant relations which had always existed between himself and the Dannovirko Fire Board. During the iivoyears there had not been one single unpleasant instance of disagreement. H,o assured the board he would always b*e pleased to assist in any way, and any information he was able to supply could always bu had on receipt of a letter from the ■em-etury.
