STRIKE AT LEEDS FUTILITY OF SYNDICALISM CITIZENS TURN STRIKEBREAKERS. (By Telegraph.— PrMj Association.— Copyright ) (Received December 17, 9 a.m.) LONDON, 16th December. The Leeds strike is collapsing. Hundreds of tramway men have resumed work. The gasworks have' also resumed. (Times— Sydney Sun Special Cables.) (Received December 17, 8.20 a.m.) LONDON. 16th December. The community at Leeds were foiced to turn strike-breakers to preserve its social existence. The strike leaders wordily trounce them, but cannot stamp out the first impulse of human nature. The fact that individual citizens, finding themselves .and families thereatened with the greatest discomfort, have taken off their coats and are attending to common tasks, already emphasises the futility of syndicalism. The supply of electricity and water is ample. The tramways are running during the day, and there are plenty of volunteers at the gasworks, but there is still an insufficient supply for domestic and manufacturing needs. Clothing factories are greatly embarrassed. Hundreds of strikers returned to work this morning, and there will probably be a stampede to-morrow. (PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WATCHING DEVELOPMENTS. , OTHER MUNICIPALITIES INTERESTED. LONDON, 16th December. Other municipalities are watching the developments of the Leeds strike with intense interest, fearing similar strikes. The Leeds cars are running under police protection, but are stopped at nightfall, the authorities fearing stonethrowing. Many pi the factories are closing down, owing to the inadequate supply of gas ; others are unable to open till daylight, and Are obliged to close at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Several scuffles have taken place between strikers and the police; truncheon charges have had to be made, and the police have had to ride through crowds of four thousand strikers in the execution of their duty.
