PREVENTION OF CRUELTY
m WELLINGTON SOCIETY MEETS. The fortnightly. meeting of the' Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held in the new room of the secretary (Mr. A. M. Anderson), in Winder's Buildings/ last evening. "Mr. E. H. Webb was In the chair. Inspector Seed reported having observed a dog lying in, a gutter on Lamb-ton-quay dying oi starvation. He hired a conveyance, and. had the dog taken to the Corporation yards, where the man in charge of the kennels said that they were' "not taking any more in, as it wasx too near Christmas. " Mr. Seed eventually destroyed, the animal. The inspector also reported that a thoroughbred mare, owned by a special constable, - which was injured near the Queen's Wharf 'recently through a shaf,t of an express running into its near hind limb, was dead. Mr. Seed said that the animal should have been shot at. the time, for it died a dreadful death some twenty-four nours later. It was an instance of a case where a horse ambulance—which the city lacked— was required.
