Further ' Improvement to tho running of tho Brooklyn tramway servico has been affohled by the opening of the Willis-street duplication for tram traffic. . Tho appearance of the street is, moreover, much enhanced by the removal of the unsightly network of overhead telegraph, telephone, and other wires, In connection with the difficulty ro« garding the enclosed western arm of tho Hutt river, tho Mayor (Mr. J. WM'Ewan), the engineer (Mr. A. Cowie), jnd Councillor's For»yth and Findlay were at last night's meeting of tho Petono Borough Council deputed to confer with the representatives of the Hutt Council on the matter. "A Reformer" liolds that tho grounds need more careful weeding, especially opposite the Museum. Tho difficulty of identification in a time of great excitement was evidenced in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, when several witnesses stated that they could not swear positively as to whether the tramear which struck a mounted (special constable's horse on 6th November in Cuba-street was a double or Bingle-deck car. It wag not till Inspector Liardet cleared up tho mystery that there appeared to be a certainty about the matter. He stated that the car was a double-decker. It ho& been trequently urged upon the local council that aa it ia regarded »r a bay to tho wrogress ot tho borough, it should, if possible, be acquired at a reasonable amount. Tho latest Government valuation assesses th© value of tho property at £4220, and Mrs. Mackenzie, as agent for her hußbund, has offered it to the council at a bedrock I price of £4000; but the Reserves Com- ! mitteo reported last week that "the latest offer made is not sufficiently attractive to* warrant the council in accepting such offer." One of tlio principal matters dealt with by the council of the Wellington Zoological Society last eveningj Roy. J. ' I There appears to be somo dissatisfaction among tho city butchers at tho action of the Master Butchers' Union and the Butchers' Union of Workers in arranging to observe the 27th hustant as a, holiday in connection with tho butchers' annual picnic, after a previous decision had boon arrived at to hold tho picnic on the third Wednesday in February. It is pointed out that if tho 27th is observed as a holiday houseI wives will havo to take in a supply of meat the day before Christmas J)«y (25th) to carry them over Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If the proposal is carried into effect it will I mean a great inconvenience to those butchers who have contracted to supply largo public institutions, for it will prac tically mean that they will bo unable to carry out their contracts. The butchers' i award provides that the tliird Wednesday in November "or such other day as shall bo agreed upon for the butchers' annual picnic" shall be observed as a holiday, and tho. butchers who are complaining contend that a bettor day than tho 27th should havo been selected.
