James Bryce (lato Ambassador to the United States), •speaking ai. the guest of the National Liberal Club at a welcome tendered him by that body on his return from his Ambassadorship, said Australia and New Zealand . are laboratories of democracy, inasmuch as they were trying experiments which only countries favoured by nature coiild possibly venture to try. He eaid the danger point in Australia arose when the British-bom became a small minority, but that point had- been passed, and the Benefits of the Imperial connection were more appreciated in Australia, now than years ago. Three very encouraging things were the condition of the land in Australia and New Zealand ; that public life was pure, and Judges absolutely above suspicion; and that the Executive was strong, and law and order well maintained.
