m WELLINGTON CLUB Wince the first prize in tha Wellington Chens Club's annual "Pethoriek" tourney was won by W. C. Hill (Glass IV.) with a scoro of 8 wine, 2 losses, uomo outstanding games have been played off, the result being that W. E. Mason (Class I.) and H. A. Mackonaio (Class V.) tied for second place, each scoring 7 wins, 3 losses. This tie was played off on Saturday evening and waa won by Mackenzie, who received the odd» of knight and move. Ho therefore takes second prize, and Mason the third, prize. Mackenzie received the congratulations of the president and other members present on his fino play, and also on his success in winning the Rhodes Scholarship at Wellington College, of which school he is now "dux." The third game of the ladder match for rung 2 (James v. Barnes) was concluded on Saturday evening. ' James was two pawns abend in the ond-ganie, but a "benevolent" move gave Barnes a chance of equalising, and the game ended in a draw at move 68. The tally at present is therefore two draws and ono win to James. The fourth gain© is scheduled for Wednesday evening. The match for rung 9 woe concluded on Saturday, when Stan. Gyles (defender) beat W. C. Hill (challenger) by 2 to 0 and two draws.
