Smith, M.P. for Waitaki, has intimated through the local press that he does not intend to re-contest the Waitaki seat the next election, says a Press Association telegram from Waimate. > A requisition is being largely signed asking Mr. Norton Francis to stand for the seat. A Press Association message from Taihape to-day states that a representative 'and numerous gathering of citizens was held in the Town Hall last night, when Mr. Anthony Nathan was entertained and presented with a service of plate in recognition of his seven years' occupancy of the Mayoral chair. The utmost enthusiasm prevailed, and eloquent tributes woro paid the services of Mr. Nathan, and also those of Mrs. Nathan, The Mayor (Mr. M'Lennan) presided.
