The Right Hon. Sir Joshua William's left for Dunedin last night. Mr. Jackson Palmer, Chief Judge of tho Native Land Court, is buck in Wellington from Auckland. Colonel Bauchop, officer in charge of the Otago Military District, arrived in Wellington from the south yesterday. Dr. MAdam, for many years a coun* cillor, and twice Mayor of Oamaru> died rather suddenly yesterday, says a Press Association telegram. Ho had been in ill-health for, some time. He was hold in high esteem by tho, people. Dr. Edith Huntley can claim the honour of being tho first lady councillor elected in Miramar. Yesterday she defeated Mr. Albert H. Griffiths by 68 to 60 voteß. Tho new councillor is one of the resident medical officers at Miramar North of the Lahmann Hoalth Home. Mr. F. H. Smith, M.P. for Waitaki, has intimated through the local press that he does not intend to re-contest the Waitaki seat the next election, says a Press Association telegram from Waimate. > A requisition is being largely signed asking Mr. Norton Francis to stand for the seat. A Press Association message from Taihape to-day states that a representative 'and numerous gathering of citizens was held in the Town Hall last night, when Mr. Anthony Nathan was entertained and presented with a service of plate in recognition of his seven years' occupancy of the Mayoral chair. The utmost enthusiasm prevailed, and eloquent tributes woro paid the services of Mr. Nathan, and also those of Mrs. Nathan, The Mayor (Mr. M'Lennan) presided.
