RACEHORSES BARRED
NO MORE ALLOWED TO GO SOUTH When the meeting was in progress in the^ Square this morning a member of tbe Strike Committee announced that no more horses were to be allowed through the pickets to the steamers. (A voice : Strengthen the pickets.) On enquiry it was ascertained that this referred to the shipment of racehorses for the South Island. . . ' Shortly afterwaTds a racehorse appeared outside the gates. Immediately the horse and groom were surrounded by pickets and strikers. Eventually ,the horse was led/ away, but 'not to the wharf. Mr. J. H. Pollock, handicapper for the Wellington Racing Club, was informed by the Strike Committee to-day that no more racehorsea would be allowed to go through the gates to the ships, and if owners or trainers brought the horses down then they would do so at their own risk. Curiously enough just before this announcement Mr. Pollick, on behalf of trainers and riders had addressed the following letter of thanks to the union : Mr. F. Curtice, President, Waterside Workers' Union, Dear Sir, — I have been asked by the trainers and attendants of the racehorses engaged at the C'.J.C. Meeting to tender you their thanks for promptly calling the members of your union together, and obtaining their consent to allow the shipment of the horses without delay on Monday, the sportsmanlike action of the waterside workers is heartily appreciated. — Yours sincerely, J. H. Pollock for trainers. Wellington, 29th October.
