MUSIC V. SCHOOLING
» AN OBDURATE PARENT.. Time occupied in musical tuition cannot legally bo exempted from tho hours which cluldron are required to attend State schools. A parent at Lower Hutt had— it was reported at the Education Board meeting to-day— arranged for her two 'children to be taught music, thereby requiring leave of absence from school every alternate Friday. The teacher had declined yto sanction this, but the parent had declined to make any other arrangement. The matter was reported to tho Truant Officer, who had threatened the parent with prosecution, but without avail. The Chairman (Mr. R. Lee) said that while he did not wish to penalise musical proclivities, he could not get away from the fact that the board was not in a position to grant the exemption. Other members pointed out that' in Lower Hutt there should be no difficulty in arranging for the tuition outside school hours, and that in any case the application could not be entertained. It was decided to insist on the attendance of the two children in question.
