MAGISTRATES' TRIBUTES
{BY TELEGRAPH — FKESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, 23rd October. News of the unexpected death of Dr. M 'Arthur came as a great shock to his many friends in Christchurch. "As Senior Magistrate of the Dominion," said Mr. H. W. Bishop, S.M., to a Press representative to-day " I deeply regret to hear of Dr. M 'Arthur's death. I have known him for over thirty years, and his death will be a distinct loss to the Bench. He was a man of considerable literary ability. He was also a sound lawyer, and his early training gave him considerable knowledge of, and insight into, human nature. . . . Although of late years his health was not good, still, after he returned from his visit to England, he seemed to regain much of his former vigour, and it was a. shock to hear that he had passed away bo suddenly. I saw him only a fortnight ago in Wellington Court, and had a long conversation with him. After I left him I remarked to amutual friend that I had never seen him looking so well and fit. In my opinion, he was a type of Magistrate, especially for a large city like Wellington, whose place will be very hard to fill." NELSON, This Day. Mr. Evans, S.M., this morning made sympathetic reference to the late Dr. 1 M'Arthur. Those who knew him spoke best of him. He was one of the leading Magistrates, and his death was a loss to tho country. Mr. |Houlker, on behalf of the legal fraternity, expressed, with deep feeling, the loss the Bar had sustained.
