RITUAL MURDER TRIAL
A SPHINX-LIKE WITNESS. EVIDENCE BY AN EX-COMMIS-SIONER OF POLICE. . . \ (By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright.) ST. PETERSBURG, 22nd Oct. Public interest in the trial of the Jewish clerk Beiliss, oni a charge of murdering the Christian \ boy Yuschchinsky in April, 1911, centres in the female witness, Vera Cheberiak who sits sphinx-like on the front bench, and is never at a loss for an answer. Krassovsky, a former Commissioner of Police, gave evidence that ho was asked to investigate the murder. ' It was first reported that the -murder had been committed by a band of robbers. He was then asked to' investigate the possibility of a ritual murder. He followed many clues, which all pointed ' to Vera Cheberiak, whose boy,, Eugeno Cheberiak, was friendly with Yuschchinßky. Vera Cheberiak always told Krassovsky that Yuschchinsky hacT been murdered either by his parents or as the victim of a ritual crime. Krassovsky stated that about this time the " Black Hundred " agitation arose against him, and ho was dismissed at the end of 1911. , But he continued enquiring on his own account. REGARDED AS OVERWHELMING. STORY OF MUR~DER BY A GANG OF ROBBERS. (Received October 23, 11 a.ml) ST. PETERSBURG; 22nd Oct. Krassovsky's evidence against Vera Cheberiak and her accomplices is regarded as overwhelming. He said ho had found nothing incriminating ' on Beiliss or, anything supporting the theory of ritual murder. One of Vera Cheberiak's gang told him that Yusohchinsky had assisted in a robbery at the Kieff Cathedral, and that the gang had murdered him, fearing treachery. Witness added that Vera's flat was ths gang's den, and had been utilised to store plunder during the 1905 pogroms.
