WHAKATANE'S PECULIAP, MISHAP. The mishap to the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Whakatane, which ran ashore at Quebec after colliding with a wharf when entering the harbour on tlie 10th September, is accounted for in a most peculiar way. A dense fire which had raged along the banks of the St. Lawrence the previous night had caused a dense smoke to obscure the leading lights just as the fog would do, and during the haze the helmsman had lost his bearings. Fortunately, however the Whakataue did not suffer any damage, and reached her destination safely, subsequently loading tho cargo originally intended for her, and sailing on the 2nd inst. for Melbourne, Sydney, and the usual New Zealand ports. She is due at Wellington about the 19th December. PERSONAL. ' Mr. G. E. Dugdale, late of the Morayshire, has joined the Wahine as seventh engineer. Latest charters include the Andromeda, a four-masted barque, of 1702 tons, fixed to load case oil at New York for New Zealand ports. Also a four-masted schooner named the Mabel Gale, 610 tons, to load lumber at Fuget Sound for New Zealand. With a part cargo of hardwood from Bunbury for Wellington the steamer Hercules sailed from Auckland last l evening. She should show up here on Saturday morning.
