LONDON, 22nd October, j General Sir ißeauchamp Duff has been appointed Commander-in-Chief in India, in succession to General Sir O'Moore Creagh. It is understood that General Sir lan Hamilton (Inspector-General •of the Oversea Forces) refused the appointment, desiring to , visit Australia and New Zealand. [Sir Beauchamp Duff, G.C.8., X.C.V.0., X.C.5.1., has for some time been secretary to the Military Department of the India Office, prior to which he 'was (190609) Chief of the Staff in India. Born in February, 1855, he entered the Army in 1874, and served in the Afghan War, tho Tsazai Expedition, the Waziristan i Expedition, and tjie South African War. Since the lat,ter war he has held several important commands in India. General Sir' O1O 1 Moore Creagh has been Commander-in-Chief tiince 1909. He has not served * tho full term of his appointment, having recently decided that the state of his health would not allow him to spend another summer in India. Strange to j say, General Duff's name was not men- i tioned for tho position of Commander-in-Chief by those in India who professed to know things. Four, in order of seniority, wero suoken of, namely, Sir lan Hamilton, Sir Horace Smith-Dor-rien. Sir James Wilcocks, and Sir Douglas Haigh.]
