The Anglican Synod, by a majority of 123 votes, conferred the church franchise on women. An amendment to the Assemblies' Act was carried enabling women to obtain the right to vote as lay representatives to Synod. Archbishop Clarke said this was a great new departure in church life, and it would influence the whole life of the community. %
