(Times— Sydney Sun Special Cables.) LONDON, 15th October. John Chowley, a bookmaker, was charged with forging a cheque. Detectives gave evidence that the accused was the. cleverest thief and forger known to "the police, rivalling the notorious " Jim the Penman." He has hitherto escaped prosecution, always remaining in the background, but on this occasion an accomplice "peached." Chowley was sentenced to four years 1 imprisonment.
