STILL SMOKING THE ILL-FATED VOLTURNO SURVIVORS REACH VARIOUS PORTS HOW DID THE FIRE OCCUR? (By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyrights
LONDON, 15th October. The Cunard liner Campania reports that the Volturno was still smoking on Sunday. Otherwise her hull appeared to be in good condition. Batches of survivors have reached Havre, Rotterdam, and Liverpool. Various theories are put forward as to the cause of the fire. Herr Badke, a German, relates that although smoking in the steerage quarters was prohibited, ho saw a, Russian emigrant smoking a cigarette. When the steward appeared, the man dropped the cigarette through a hole in the floor, amongst the emigrants' baggage, and Badko afterwards lifted the trap-door of the compartment, which was on fire, and he immediately raised an alarm. The Volturno's doctor declares that the allegations of panic amongst the crew are unfounded. A frenzied woman passenger threw her child to the Devonian's boat-crew. It fell into the water, and Haaelwood, a sailor, plunged overboard, and at the risk of being crushed between the boat and the Voltumo's side, rescued it. The survivors agree that the loss of life was largely due to the panic-stricken people jumping into the sea. One woman threw her child into the water and jumped after it. Three boys in one family leaped overboard, while the mother and her other children were saved. ,
