ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS WESLEY SUNDAY SCHOOL
The seventy-second anniversary celebrations in connection with, the Taranakistreet Wesley Sunday School were con' tirnied last evening. At 6 o'clock a tea-meeting was held in the schoolroom. Nearly 400 persons were seated at the tables, which were all neatly decorated. The competition in connection with these decorations resulted as follows: First prize, Misses Hilda Kelly and Gladys Carter; second prize, Masters Russell Grave, Raymond Carter, Redvers Haymes, and Roy Forsyth. Ihe tea was followed by a concert in the church, Mr. T. H. Grave presiding over a large attendance. Owing to the unavoidable absence of the Rev. J. G. Chapman, who is confined to his home, the Rev. J. H. White also occupied a seat in the pulpit. ' In his annual report tho secretary (Mr. L. J. Brabin) stated that the general progress of the school had been evidenced by the successful development and interest sustained in every department of the work. During the year the school was visited by members of the Chapman-Alexander Mission Party, and the TElev. Vallance Cook. As a result of services conducted, practically the whole school decided to devote their lives to the service of the Master. Collections amounting to £47 6s 5d were contributed to Home and Foreign Missions. The social instincts of the scholars were well catered fqr by holding "socials," rambles, and the annual picnic. A pleasing feature of the school work is the number of scholars who live up to the aim of the school — " every member present every Sunday, on time, with own Bible and hymn-book, an offering, a studied lesson, and a mind to learn." Twelve months had passed since the inauguration of that aim, and during that time 150 scholars fully complied with the aim. There was also an increasing interest in the library. The statistics showed that the total membership of the school at present stood at 500, the average attendance being 366. The statement of finances showed a credit balance of £41 19s. A feature of the entertainment was a sacred cantata, entitled " Pilgrim Travellers," which was greatly appreciated by those present. The principals, who represented pilgrims of olden time, any time, and to-day, were as follow : Bert Stokes, Rupert Bennett, Neil Fuller, Cyril Dowdy, Bert Fiebeg, Russell Grave, Willie Armstrong, Randall Huffam, Roy Forsythe, Joy Sutl'erland, Eileen Beggs, Phyllis Barrett, Erica Pasche, • Myra Hedgman, Roda Ward, Muriel Lerwell, and Zeta Pasche. During the evening the scholars and choir, assisted by an orchestra, sang several anthems and hymns. The former, which included "Holy Art Thou," "Let God be Magnified," and "The Lord God Omnipotent^ Reigneth," were rendered in a most* ■efficient manner under the baton of Mr. F. Billman, who has acted as musical conductor at the anniversary celebrations for the past thirty -five years. Mr. W. J. Harland presided at the organ. A short address was given by ftlr. T. H. Grave, superintendent, who spoke of the important work of the Sunday School. At the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was passed to all those who had contributed towards the musical portion of the festivities, and to the other helpers. Officers elected for the ensuing year are as follow : Acting-superintendent, Mr. C. H. Barrett ; secretary, Mr. L. J. Brabin ; assistants, Messrs. H. Hambly, W. H. Heyhoe, and W. B. Strong; treasurer, Mr. L. Travel's ; librarian, Mr. W. A. Grenfell ; assistants. Messrs. G. Kuchen aild J. Ralph ; musical conductor, Mr. F. Billman ; organists, Miss Brittain and Mr. R.
