CUSTOMS REVISION

SOME INTERESTING PREDICTIONS Some indication of the Government's intentions in regard to Customs tariff is going tho round of the lobbies. It is generally conceded that nothing of a drastic nature will bo attempted, and. tliat the readjustment aimed at will bo an increase h> the taxation on luxuries. The most important change, as far aa can be gathered, will bo an increase of 3d a gallon on beer, which it is estimated will produce £130,000 a year; and it is also anticipated that tho duty on. galvanised iron will be removed. Another important reform will probably be tho removal of the duty on tho commoner classes of crockery and glassware. It is further understood that motor-care will bo taxed on a. sliding scale, ticcording to value, and the duty on gold and silver will be considerably increased. There is to be no increase in the tax on tobacco, nor, it is^ understood, will there be any additional impost placed on champagne and other high-priced wines. LATE SHIPPING. ♦ ARRIVALS. The " Reform Year- Book," edited by Mr. E. C. Huie, journalist, Christchurch, and published by tho national executive of the New Zealand Reform League, is a very useful and much-needed compilation. The editor states that tho main object in bringing out tho book is "to provide, in a concise and accessible form, some political information likely to be of use to those supporters of the party who are actively interesting themselves in the return of Reform candidates to Parlia* ment." It is thus frankly a party publication, the method followed being similar to that adopted by tho compilers of English party year-bookß.' In spite of its strong party tinge, the merits of this little book of 116 pages cannot be gainsaid. It contains a concise biography of members of Parliament ; Parliamentary procedure and elections aro explained, and lists of Parliaments and Prime Ministers from the establishment of responsible government in 1«56 me given. A brief summary of the Acts placed on tho Statute Book in the session of 1912 follows ; then there are Bta« tistics of receipts and expenditure for tho years 1902-12, local government finance, 1903-12 ; the value of capital and unimproved lands, 1903-12, and numbe* of persons and cost of public service, 1907-12. A short bibliography for tho use of political students is an interesting feature; while the votes recorded for members at tho four genoral elections. 1902, 1905, 1908, and 1911, will be of great service to tho average man, as well as tho student and prospective candidate. _ Tho Department of Agriculture h'aa just received copies of tho British W&v Department's tender forms for the buoply of preserved meat fur the army con-i tracta, "" " * - *
