Pensioners "housed at tli9 Ohiro Home have a small allowance of pocket money. At yestei day's meeting of tho Charitable Aid Commitoee Dr. Mackenzie asked if this were still granted. He thought that it did the old men no harm, it was so small, even if spent in a glass of beer ; ac which a member of the Board suggested facetiously that it was most desirable that, beer should bo bought, if only as a safeguard against appendicitis. The superintendent of charitable aid explained that when he was first connected with the Home the cost of maintenance was calculated to be 8s 6d per head per week, so pensioners with 10s per week were given a rebate of Is 6d. In a subsequent and more de- ! tailed calculation, however, it was found that the cost was about 10s, and to the ratepayers about 12s 4d, when interest on capital value was taken into account. In view of this the Board considered I that there was no ground for allowing a rebato to pensioners, but it decided j instead to grant to all inmates who were well-behaved and willing to assist with the work of the Home, a small amount !of pocket money. That system was still { adhered to, and pocket money varying from Is 6d to 6s per month was now allowed the old people, in addition to tobacco or some equivalent extra. No fewer than 513,000 trout have been reared in the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society's hatcheries at Hagley Park this year, and placed in the North Canterbury rivers. An epidemic of measles hag necessitated the closing of the infant room at the Timaru bouth School, and up to Standard 11. About 200 children .were abtent on Monda"
