HUGE FIFE COLLIERIES
m One of the great facts of modern industrial life in the United Kingdom is ,the wonderful development attained within two decades by the Fifeshire collieries, which aro now outputting nine million tons a year. To ship this enormous output of coal n»w coal ports have been developed, of which Methil now ships more coal than any in the United Kingdom. It has grown from 500 people twenty years ago to a population of 20,000. "The growth ot the mining population in Fife," says a writer in the Glasgow Herald, "is reflected in the fact that it includes 26,634, or 31.5 per cent, of the working male population, an increase of 70.9 per cent, compared with 1901. "The Fife coalfield may be regarded as practically inexhaustible. The Parliamentary Commission of 1905, anticipating the developments indicated, Teported that about two-thirds of the coal under the Forth would be worked by Fifeshire collieries, and that the available resources at less than 4000 feet would amount to something like 5,700,000,000 i ton*, sufficient to maintain th» prwent J output lor, Aearly 10Q0 years.."- :
