After an uneventful but pleusant voyogo from' London, via way portß, the Shaw, Stivill, and Albton Company's X.M.S. lontc arrived In port shortly after 7 o'clock this morning, and anchored In tho stream to await inspection by tho Port Health Officer. The vessel having been cleared, *he berthed at the King's Wharf about two hours later. Throughout the whole of tho long journey moderate to ttno weather was experienced, no rtnlly bad weather being encountered. Departure, from the Home port was taken oh the 17th July, and a call was mado at Tonerltto seven days later. Capetown was readied on the Oth AugUßt, and after taking on board passengers, mails, etc., she continued "the voyage next day. Across tho Southern Ocean tho weather was bitterly cold, and those on board had an opportunity to indulge in the sport ot snowballing. Tho lonic arrived at Hobart on Saturday last, and sailed on the final stretch of tho voyage last Monday, arriving hero as mentioned above. > The repoit regarding the health of passengers was a decided contrast to that of tho majority of the vessels which havo of lato arrived from London. There was not a single case of sickness, no births or deaths, and no accidents. In addition to the passengers by tho lonic already published in tho Post, tho following were brought from Capetown and Ilobart for Wellington : —Saloon : Mr. and Mrs. McNeill and 3 children, Messrs. Walton, and A, Woodley. MOANA AT SAN FRANCISCO. Tue'R.M.S. Moana, which sailed from Wcl« llngton for San Francisco, vlu tho usual wuy ports, on tho 15th August, arrived at her destination on Thursday last— due date. PERSONAL. Mr. A. Davits has Joined the Arahura as flrsb mate in succession to Mr. C. Roberts. Mr. F. A. C. Heslop has been engaged M second mate of tho Mararoa. Mr George P. Walters, of the Teutonic, Joined tho lonic at London as second olllccr in succession to Mr. J. M. Morrow. Mr. S. B. Morfeo is acting as fifth offlccr of tho same vessel, having also signed on at London. Mr. S. D. Sloggett is now Marconi operator on tho lonic, having Joined in place of Mr. Lewis, who left tho vessel at London. Mr. J. McCann Is now on the lonic as second engineer. / FROM THE CHATHAMS. The Hlmltaugl is duo in port this afternoon from the Chathams, via Lyttolton. She arrived at tho southern port ' at 0 o'clock on Thursday night, completing tho round trip Id the smart time of 12 days. She has on hoard in addition to malls, etc., a quantity ot fish aud produce. - ' , 1 THE FIRE' ON THE RAKAIA. Advices received from Perth state that tho Ore on the steamer Rakata proved to be more Berious than was at first expected. The work of discharging cargo was continued, and upwards of v hundred meu were employed on different shifts. Just as tho men were going to tea at 8 o'clock on tho 19th lust, the beat ot the firo was discovered on the starboard side ot No. 3 lmtch about. Bft from tho floor. The hatch contained 13,600 bags ot ivhoat, but most of this was landed Into tho hulks. During tho uight a large quantity of loose wheat was brought out of tho hold, together with something like 500 damaged bags. On getting to tho scat of tho flro It was found that another outbreak hkd appeared in tho lower crosshead bunker on the starboard Bide, and a quantity of Insulation had been destroyed. Tho captain at once brought Into play a patent firo extinguisher by' pumping sulphur into tho bunker. Tho vessel being equipped with emoko helmets aud other gear, these were also 1 put "into use by, the members of the crow. Telegraphic advlco was received from Greymouth to-day to the effect that tho weather is very bad, there being a heavy sea on tho, bar and a heavy fresh.
