CENTRAL MISSION BOYS' BAND

The first annual report of the Central Mission Boys' Band, which will shortly be read at the anniversary gathering, states that the work of the band for the first year had been very heavy, and the turn-outs exceptionally good. The band was inaugurated in July last, and the rapid progress made by tho boys enabled them to appear in public by the month of November; since then they had paraded 0n. 98 occasions. Numerous letters, etc., from the sick and aged, expressive of gratitude and thanks, had been received. JEighty seven boys had been enrolled from time to time, and after the names of those who had left the town had been struck off, there still remained- aa active list of 50. The instruments had cost £200, of which £72 is still owing. Weekly subscriptions towards the purchasing of music amounted to £8 3s 3d. The music cost £14 lbs 6d, but the balance had been raised by special efforts. The treasurer's accounts showed a credit balahce of £14 8s 7d, but the liabilities - were £80. Bandsmen R. Hester, A. Baker, Algie Shaw, and G. Kitching had been the recipients of medals. The best records for the year are as follow : — Attendance at practice (possible 51) Hehneker, M'Guire, and Gamble— Full attendances; open-air services (possible 63) G-. Tierney — Full attendances; carolling (possible 12), R. Hester, C. Hester, C. Allsopp, M. Leaman, ,and L. Hester ; care of instrument, etc. (possible 230), Cohgdon 229, Tierney 228, andL. Baker 222. The 6fßcers for the ensuing year are : — Bandmaster) K. Hester; deputy-band-master, G» Tierney; drum major, L. Leslie; secretary, S. Stokes; sergeant, A. Congdon: corporal, F. Gamble; lance-corporal, 0. Allscpp.
