BOXED THE KAISER'S CARS'
As the wife of a former British dijhomajt, Lady Macdonell in her remind scences tells the following story o{ Beif» lin 1875-78: "The Crown Prinoe, now the Kaiser, was a frequent visitor ; /ha ,was then a nhe young man with tv strong sense of fun and teasing. He liked our English teas, and afterwards 'used to claim me for a game of draughts. In the salon there was a big window with a deep seat that he v especially favoured 5 to this a small table was drawn up and fine "battles ensued over the board. "I shall never forget one occasion when he accused me of cheating. H© was so apparently serious that I became infuriated, and, unmindful of his high estate or my duty as hostess, I impulsively " leant across the table aftd boxed his ears! His sense of humour and the satisfaction of having been so successful in working upon my feelings saved the situation. I received full punishment later, for ever afterwards when he met me he Used to cry, 'I know a lady who cheats at draughts 1' ""
