ARTHUR OF CONNAUGHT
ROYAL SPECIAL MISSIONER. " Prince Arthur of Connaught, at' the age of 30, is known as one of the ablest and most highly-regarded of those who bear the responsibilities of Royal blood in Europe," says the Telegraph, in congratulating him on his engagement to the young Duchess of Fife. " His qualities soon marked him out for work of the highest Courtly' responsibility, and for years past he has been entrusted, by King George as by the late King, with missions of th,e utmost importance in the maintaining v of relationships between the British and other Courts. It was Prince Arthur who, as the emissary of King Edward, invested the - late Emperor Mutsu-Hito with the Order of the Garter at Tokio, receiving on that occasion the singular distinction of investiture by the Emperor's own hands with the Order of the Chrysanthemum. Six years later he represented King George at the Emperor s funeral. "It was Prince Arthur who \rent to Rome to attend the baptism of the Prince of Piedmont, and afterwards had audience of the Pope. He has been entrusted with several Royal missions to Germany, including attendance at the wedding of the Crown Prince. In the past few years he has visited France, Spain, Portugal, Malta, Italy, ' Egypt, British East Africa, Germany, Russia, Sweden, and Denmark. "For such a couple a great future of usefulness and honour, not only in English life, but in that of the Empire, is surely reserved."
