Although the geared turbine continues to make slow progress in respect of cargo shipping, the favour which it is finding with owners of i Other typeß of vessels seems to be phenomenally rapid. There are several cases in which the owners of direct-driving turbine steamers are seriously of a mind to change over to the newer arrangement (says the London Shipping Ga«etti3)- . Indeed, one well-known company has already decided to make the change. This is the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, whose Maheno ia to be taken off the Auckland-Sydney service and extensively overhauled at Port Chalmers. While she ia of, the change from direct-driving to geared turbines is. to be made. The Maheno, which Was built at Dumbarton, was the Union Company's first turbine steamer. That the alteration will immensely improve the economy of the steamer may be assumed without the least disparagement to the direct-driving turbine. KAIKOURA, PROM HOME. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Kaikoura, which arrived at Auckland from London on Thursday, Bailed from the Home port on the morning of the Bth July, and until arrival at Teneriffe some six days later, moderate westerly and north-westerly winds prevailed. The vessel arrived at Capetown on the 31st July, and after coaling, Bailed again on the following day. Across the Southern Ocean moderate north-westerly and south-west-erly winds were experienced, and at 50deg. east a westerly gale, lasting two days, was encountered. She arrived at Hobart on the 22nd August, and on resuming her journey strong soutfi-south-westerly winds, together with heavy seas, were experienced for three days. The vessel has a large part cargo to put out at the northern port, and in consequence is not due here until a fortnight hence. Captain A. W. McKellar, R.N.R., is in command, and has with him the following officers :— Chief, Mr R. B. Neale; second, Mr P. P. Halnen; third, Mr H. M. Wood ; fourth, Mr J. S. Bullock ; safgeon, Dr. J. H. Tainui), took on board at the northern port a valuable cargo of whalebone, whale oil, and bullion, in addition to the usual lines of general merchandise. The vessel is scheduled to sail from here for London on Thursday next. WITHIN WIRELESS CALL. The following vessels will be within wireless range to-day :—Mautiganul, Manuka, Malta!, Tofua, Marama, Victoria, Riverina, Aparima, Delphic, Navua, and Wahine. For Sunday. Moe» raki, Manuka, Maitai, Tofua, Marama, Aparima, Delphic, and Maunganui. TO LOAD AT NEW YORK. Advice has been received to the effect that the steamer Burgertneister Hackmann, .4315 tons, ts to take the August-September loading at New York for New Zealand ports under the auspices of the Vacuum Oil Company. The Clan Maclnnes, having completed discharge of a part cargo of hardwood from Bunbury, sailed for Lyttelton to put out the remainder. Subsequently she proceeds to New Caledonia, probably on Thursday next, to load chrome ore for the United States of America. tn order to facilitate the rapid marketing of Motueka and Nelson produce during the coming season, it is the intention of the Anchor Steamship Company to supplement the s.s. Nikau by placing a second steamer on the Wellington-Nelson-Motueka run, thus making a daily service each way. It is expected that the Union Company's steamer Aparima, en rotrfe from Calcutta to New Zealand, will reach Auckland on Monday next, she should arrive in Wellington about the 4th September. The 'Union Company's cargo steamer Kaltuna, which is running in the Melbourne-Welling-ton, via Hobart and South trip, in place of the Manuka, is due at Wellington on Saturday next.
