Mr. Hawker, who attempted to fly round Britain in a hydro-aeroplarte for the Daily Mail prize of £5000, states that had he been at a greater height he could easily have descended safely by making a spiral descent at the time of the mishap. The Times declares that Hawker deserves generous praise for his excellent work. His perseverance and pluck had been worthily recognised by the promoi tere of the competition.

(Press Association). KAUPER IN HOSPITAL. WATERPLANE bTdLY WRECKED. MESSAGE FROM MR. CHURCHILL. (Rsceived August 29, 10.5 a.m.) LONDON, 28th August. Mr. Kauper, Mr. Hawker's mechanician, is still in hospital as a result of the injuries he sustained when the machine fell. His wounds are severe, but he is progressing. The waterplane, except the engine, is a total wreck. The newspapers unanimously acclaim the hydro-pianist's magnificent efforts, -which ha,ve shown that the British waterplane ere long will win. Mr. Churchill (First Lord of the Admiralty), in a message to the Daily Mail, says that Hawker achieved a wonderful result. The competition was of real value to British flying. "Though we started last," he adds, "we must persevere till we are in the first place."'
