AGREEMENT IN GROCERS' DISPUTE

In the grocers' dispute before the Conciliation Council to-day, wages were agreed to as follow :— -Fifteen to sixteen years of age, 10s per week; sixteen to seventeen years, 15» penweek: seventeen to eighteen years, £1 per week; eighteen to nineteen years, £1 5s per week ; . nineteen to twenty years, £1 10s per week; twenty to twenty-one years, £1 15s per week} twenty-one to twenty-two years, ~£<J 2s fid per week ; from twenty-two years and upwards, £2 103 per week.The minimum late for drivers of the age of twenfcy-three yearg and over was fixed at £2 10s per week. No youth under the age of eighteen yea*3 is to be employed in driving within a radius of five miles of Christchurch. A clause dealing with the employ* merit of casual' -workers, as embodied in the Auckland agreement, was discussed at great length. The union asked for Is 3d per hour and the employers offered time and 'a-quarter. The Commissioner said that the Court would not agree to time and aquarter. He thought that there were some employers who might abuse it. Finally it was agreed not to insert the casual labour clause. The clauses in the agreement relating to holidays, underrate workers, clerks, the definition of "assistant," the scope and term of the award, and preference Were agreed to without discussion.
