ROAD BOARD CLERK IN TROUBLE

AUCKLAND, 28th August. At the Supreme Court, Alexander Gore Brett, late clerk of the Eden Terrace Road Board, was found guilty of having defrauded the board between September and July last of £237. For the defence it was urged that family troubles and a, painful disease of the ear had upset accused's mental balance. Counsel said that carelessness, and not criminal intent was the cause of the trouble. Accused declared that systematic thefts had taken place from the till ahd he was afraid to report them, muddling the books to conceal the losses. The jury recommended lenient treatment, and accused was ordered to come up for sentehce when called upon, provided he made restitution.
