EASTBOURNE FERRY SERVICE

TO-MORROW'S FUNCTION. A meeting of the committee appointed by the residents of Eastbourne to control the function to be tendered to the Mayor (Mr, W. J. Organ) and councillors as a mark of the residents' appreciation for the services rendered by them in connection with the municipali6ation of the ferry service was held lo6t night. Mr. J. P. Kelly presided. In thanking the various committees for the work done, he said the occasion marked an epoch in the history of tho Bay. and it was due to the residents to publicly thank th© nv&n who had completed negotiations so expeditiouslv and well. There was no doubt, he added, that the municipal control would prove a big factor in further settlement taking place in the Bay. It the attractions were systematically advertised and its residential qualifications spread broadcast, coupled with a judicious reduction in fares from time to time, there was not the slightest doubt that within a few years the place would treble its population. This was what was wanted by the residents, a.nd the occasion could not pass without, showing their appreciation and confidence in the men who had boen the means of taking over tho service. The programme for Saturday evening will fie one of the finest yet submitted for the entertainment of patron* at Eastbourne. The contributors will include the Orpheus Quartette, Miss Cecil Haines, Betty Purdom, E. Luks, Roland Digby, J. CulfordBell, Stanley Rankin, in addition to on orchestra of twenty instruments provided by Mr. M'Laughlm. . A ipecial steamer has been provided for th© convenience of townspeople, leaving the wharf at 7 p.m., and returning after the function.

Cold and showery weather i« still the prospect before the people as forecasted by the Weather Bureau. Tho present southerly winds are likely to change by way of west to north, and probably increase in force with westerly disturbance. A Weak night is in store.,
