NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL ENGAGING A COACH. At last night's meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Lawn Tennie Association, Mr. L. G. Mackay presided. Mr. Mackay brought forward a motion that the association should consider the question of appointing a professional coach, whose services would be available for any of the affiliated clubs. Speaking to the motion, Mr. Mackay said that, with a few exceptions, New Zealand had not produced many high-grade players. Probably a good coach would be able to bring about a great improvement. They could give the coach £250, and, say, pay his passage one way (£43, second clase). With 11,000 players on the roll, a levy of 8d per head would cover expenses. The coach, of course, would be mainly engaged with class coaching. Mr. Berry seconded the motion. Mr. White-Pareons thought the idea of one coach unworkable. It would not be lpng i before the provinces would be considering the question of engaging coachee* themselves. On the motion of Mr. Henderson, "seconded by Mr. Kean, it was resolved : "That this council approves of the sug^ gestion for the appointment of a coach, and that it should be a request to the management committee to go into the financial aspect of the matter and report to next meeting." In connection with the New Zealand Championship Tournament, it was agreed that the members recommended by the Auckland Association act witß the management commrttee in conducting th© meeting.
