HOME HINTS. A New Treatment of Matting.— When the matting on the floor is partly worn and very easily soiled, try, after washing away all the dust, one good coa,t of olivegreen paint. It comes out just like new, and can be washed as easily as a hardwood floor. Economical Night Lights.— Collect some old pill boxes, odds and ends of candles, and candle fat from the candlesticks, get 6ome crochet cotton and a bit of beeswax. The cotton, after beeswaxing it, must be cut into small lengths; then fix these into pin holes made in the bottom of the pill boxes, and hold each little wick in position while filling the box with the melted candle grease. This soon hardens in a cool place. To use, float the pill box on a little water in a saucer in the usual way. f The Lamp Wiok.— When the wick in an oil lamp or stove begins to get short sew a piece of flannel on the end in the i oil. The wick will then be used up en* tirely. For a Dark Stairway.— Place a piece of white oilcloth at the foot of a dark j flight of stairs; it will warn those who I are descending and prevent unpleasant falls. To Preserve Lemone.-"Lemons will keep fresh for weeks at a time if they are laid on a paper on a shelf, with a tumbler turned over each one. DAINTY 'SANDWICHES. Sweetbread Sandwiches. — Take some cold cooked sweetbread and cut into thin slices. Arrange on a sJioe of bread. Cover another slice with a puree of cooked _ green peas moistened with mayonnaise sauce and well flavoured. Press together, cut into 6qi^ares, and garnish with shred truffle. Olive and Anchovy Sandwiches. — Take some large Spanish olive* wipe them dry, stone them and chop 6mall. Spread Boftie brown bread and butter very lightly with anchovy paste, and add the chopped olive. Press together, cut into circles, and garnish with a little shred olive, and sprigs of pa.reley. Game Sandwiches.— Take the remains of cold cooked game, free from skin, bone, and gristle. Allow to a quarter of a pound two hard-boiled yolks of eggs. Pound together, season, and moisten with a little crea-m. Spread on & slice of brown bread. On a slice of buttered white bread spread some shred lettuce. Press together, cut into fingers, and decorate with ooraJine pepper. Stuffed Rolls.— Procure the desired number of very small torpedo-shaped rolls of unsweetened milk bread and elit off the top. Remove most of the inside orumb, and put the cases' into the oven to get crisp._ Make some buttered egg and stir into ,it some little squares of ham. Fill the rolls and leave until cold. Arrange in a dish or on a plate, and garnish witjh parsley. Stuffed Rolls (No. 2).— Obtain rolls as before, but of a round shape. Proceed as before, but fill with a mixture of shred nuts mixed into well flavoured mayonnaise sauce. Honey Sandwiches. — Cut somp slices of sponge or Madeira, cake, and epred with honey. Press together, trim into circles, and ice with a border of" white icing by means of a bag and pipe. Fruit Sandwiches. -•- Use- bananas, peaches, apricots, and pineapple cut very email. Whip 6ome cream and sweeten it. Spread somo slices of sponge or Madeira cake with tho fruit and cream, cut into triangles, and decorate with shopped cherries and angelica. Banana and Rod Currant Sandwich. — Use slices of milk bread, and spread one with red currant jelly, the other with banana pulp, fclightly »fc«et«ned. Pree* together, and either, ice or terve plain*
