m A NEW BODY FORMED. The movement for the formation of a Chamber of Commerce for Te Aw> lias been taken up with enthusiasm by a large number of business men in that part of the city. At a -well-attended meeting of people interested in the matter, held at the Town Hall yesterday afternoon, the Hon. C. M. Luke, M.L.C., who was voted to the chair, spoke of the necessity for collective action on progressive lines, and announced that up to the present no fewer than 92 representatives of leading business firms had signed on as members. It was decided to style the new body "The Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce," and that it should be duly registered as an association formed for purposes not of gain. A provisional council of fourteen members was set up to carry on the business of the Chamber till the date of the annual meeting, three months hence. The' council consists of the following:—The Hon. C. M. Luke, M.L.C. (S. Luke and Co., Ltd.), Messrs. W. H. P. Barber (W. Barber and Co.), James Reid (Keene and Reid), A. Leigh Hunt (New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Distributing Co., Ltd.), H. A. Fox (Office Supplies Co.), George Winder, Thomas Bush- (Union Clothing Co.), Robert Hall (R. Hall and Co.), J. Castle, F. Townsend (Townsend and Paul), William Allan (Veitch and Allan), J. Brodie (J. Brodie and Co.), W Jack (Kempthorne, Prosser and Co.), and W. Smith (Smith and Smith, Ltd.) The newly-elected council met later The Hon. C. M. Lnke was elected president, Mr, A. Leigh Hunt vioe-presi-dent, Mr. J. Reid treasurer, and Mr. R. W. Gilbert secretary pro tern. . The council 'then adjourned till Monday next.
