THE COST IN NEW ZEALAND. The Commissioner of Pensions records in his fifteenth annual report that tho total pensions and liability thereon at the close of tho year wore as follow? Old-age, 16,509 (£412,408 : widows' 1315 (£24768)5 military, 568 (£19,026) jtotals, 18,390 (£456,202) The annual liability under the Military Pensions Act has. after six months working, already reached £22,000, and claims are coming in at the rate of six per week. Regarding this class of pension, 1062 enquiries were recorded, 667 granted, and 118 refused. Sixty-four of trie completed claims have been lodged by Maoris and twenty-four were granted. Applications were received from men. resident in the United States, South Africa, Australia, and Tonga, but these had no claim. , The total deaths during the year were: Old-age pensioners 15b9, widows 10>, military 9. Since 1898, when the Act camo into operation, 36,823 claims have been eetabhshed. The cost of administration was £5260 odd. •
