CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

At the meeting of the Council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce held yesterday, the President, Mr. A. E. Mabin, was in the chair. Replying to the Chamber's suggestion that the Wellington-Napier steamer ser» vice should be extended to Tauranga, Messrs. Richardson and Co., of Napier, wrote Btating that this would be more impracticable than a direct service, for the reason that two steamers would "require to get a picking" and that, in addition, the transhipping charges at Napier were Very heavy—somewhere in the vicinity of 5s per ton. "It will be quite obvious to your Chamber," concluded the letter, "that this item will prove a stumbling block to the suggestion." The council decided to take no further steps in the matter. Proposals regarding the annual prize essays at the Technical School were

submitted by Mr. W. S. La, Trobe, the ) director, acting on a BUgge&bion m&da by Mr. Rockel. of the Technical Day School. It was thought, said Mr. La Trobe, that the Chamber might bo suffix ciently interested in the matter to make a small grant for the prises, to be called the "Wellington Chamber of Commerce Essay Prizes." It wa» resolved that it could not entertain the proposal. A letter waß received from the We)» linjjton Master Grocere' Association complaining of the hardship entailed upon members through the Magistrates in regard to the law respecting the recovei'y of debt. The association stated that it was proposed to send a deputation to the Minister for Justice urging Mm "to alter the idea of the Magistrates with respect to making orders for payment on judgment summonses." The &B<iociation suggested that every association of employers should Bend a deputation to the Minister. The request was declined on the j 'grounds that the Minister could not bo / expected to interfere with the Magis* trates.
