ON BEHALF OF THE REFORM PARTY

1 » MR. W. H. D. BELL, M.P., AT KHANDALLAH. In addressing a meeting of his electors at Khandallah last evening, Mr. W. H. D. Bell, M.P. for the Suburbs, touched on general politics and the career of the Reform Party to which he belonged. He believed the party in power had justified itself. He cited the case of the Public Service Board as a great reform accomplished of special interest to Khandallah, where so many of the residents were in the Public Service. It had been said that the change had not operated smoothly — it was hardly to be expected that it would — so great and far-reaching a change — and it had certainly done one thing : it had removed political influence from the Public* Service, and if a Civil servant did not get on under the present regime he could not put his failure down to the influence of ■ politics. Mr. Bell went on to explain the land 'Jegislation of the Reform Party and its effects. He mentioned the increase in the graduated land tax as calculated to increase settlement. The largu landowners were cutting up, and he mentioned an instance where valuable land was being cut up because it was impossible to hold it under the graduated Jand tax. They wanted to people this land with the small and prosperous freeholders. "The speaker said ho did not think any Government within the lasb thirty years would have had the backbone to deal with the AVaihi trouble as Mr. Massey had don", and what was the result? — the Government was stronger in Wailu than ever.
