ENGINE-DRIVERS

A DOMINION AWARD WANTED. A deputation representing the Enginedrivers' Unions of New Zealand, and including Messrs. Reed, general secretary, T. Cain (Auckland), and Dempsey (Canterbury), waited on the Prime Minister yesterday, Mr. J. G. Coates introducing it. The deputation urged as its chief request that the Conciliation and Arbitration Act be so amended as to provide for a Dominion award for engine-drivers. It was pointed out that through a flaw in the existing Act engine-drivers employed, for instance, in a sawmill or factory could only obtain the maximum wages given under the particular award affecting their fellow workers at the sawmill or faptory. Mr. Massey replied lhat he was prepared to grant the request of the deputation respecting Dominion award provisions. He added, however, that the Bill now in the hands of the printers contained a clause which he expected would meet the requirements of the situation. As soon as it was ready he would forward a copy to the union, and if the clause did not meet with the wishes set forth hy the deputation he would be prepared to insert some provision to meet the case, after conferring with the union. The deputation had several minor amendments to suggest, but decided to hold them over till the Bill had been circulated.
