TIMARU MAYORAL POLL

TIMABU, 26th May. After hearing some evidence to-day, the Magistrate ordered a recount of votes in connection with the late Mayoral election. One deputy, who had re« turned seven informal votes, stated that he put aside, as informally marked, some which the Magistrate said should have been admitted. Two witnesses said that they were refused papers on the grounds that their names were not on the roll, when in. fact they were, but not in correct alphabetical order. During the discussion frequent reference was made to the returning officer having no check on thq, deputies, all he could do being to tot up the numbers they gave him. Mr David Stuart, J.P., was appointed to make the recount.
