COLD AND BOISTEROUS
DISMAL PROSPECT, The barometric chart to-day shows a low pressure area of cyclonic character, with the main centre in high latitudes. The barometer is higher at Macquarie Islands than at the Bluff, There is more than one centre in the disturbance, and this accounts for the fact that in some disHcts the winds have been ex--tremely squally, while in other parts moderate breezes only hay« been experienced. Hail and snow were reported in some parts this morning at the time that the sun was shining in Wellington. But here also it was not long before the sky clouded over. The forecast is for high westerly winds changing to southerly, cold and boisterous weather, rain probable generally, with snow on the higher levels, and hail and sleet in many parts of the country. A Very cold night may be expected generally. This dismal prospect, however, will not hold over a very long period. The barometer is expected* to rise everywhere shortly, and there is a prospect of fine weather— bright days and cold, in short, a great improvement-— about the middle of next week.
