SADDLERS' DISPUTE

MEETING OF CONCILIATION COUNCIL. A sitting of the -Conciliation Council (Mr. P. Hally) presiding) was held yesterday to consider the dispute between the parties in the saddlery trade. The following assessors represented the employers : — Messrs. W. Wiggins, P. R. Ruraell, H. Evans with W. A. W. Grenfell as agent. The union's representatives were: — Messrs. R. J. Henry, J. Smith, H. Heap, with W. E. Kennedy as agent. The dispute covers the whole of the Wellington industrial district. The union's pro{x>sals include the following : — Overtime at tfft rate of time and a quarter for the first three hours ; wages of £i> per week : increase of wages for female stitchers ; that arrangements for piece-work be made with the union instead of the individual workers ; increase in the number of holidays to ten days per annum, and for payment of all such holidays ; and a preference clause similar to the one in the Wellington carpenters' award. •Included in the counter proposals are the following: — A continuance of the overtime rates of the old award ; a weekly wage of £2 14s 5 and provision for the holidays (six) as provided in the Factory Act. In committee agreement was reached on the points of wages for adult male workers, apprentices and improvers, and hours of work. The sitting of the council was adjourned to this afternoon, when- the assessors will discuss the proposals with regard to overtime, women workers, and preference.
