EX-MAYORS AND COUNCILLORS
ENTERTAINED AT LUNCHEON. Ex-Mayors, councillors, and ex-coun-cillors, and civic officers were yesterday entertained at luncheon in the Concert Chamber by the new Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke). Among those present were Dr. Newman, Messrs. J. Duthie, T. W. Hislop, D. M'Laren, and Hon. C. M. Luke, Messrs. A. de B. Brandon, J. G. W. Aitken, and T. M. Wilford. The Mayor proposed the health of the immediate ex-Mayor, referring in ' terms of praise to Mr. M'Laren and Mrs. M'Laren. In his reply Mr. M'Laren advised new councillors to go slow. The toast to the Mayor and council was proposed by Dr. Newman and responded to by tho Mayor and Councillors Fletcher and Barber. "Ex-councillors" were honoured at the request of Mr. John Duthie, who expressed surprise that such citizens as Messrs. Cohen and Trevor had been Excluded from the new council. Messrs. J. Smith, F. Cohen, G. Shirtcliffe, and J. Trevor responded. Other toasts proposed were : "City Officers" (Hon. T. W. Hislop), "The Press" (Councillor Wright), and "The Ladies" (Councillor Fuller).
